The Institute of Eye Surgery at Whitfield Clinic provides a comprehensive, consultant-delivered, emergency and elective ophthalmic service. The Institute of Eye Surgery adopts a patient-centred approach, ensuring optimum quality of care through ongoing research and audit, and access to that care through administrative support. The Institute of Eye Surgery provides treatments for eye conditions such as Glaucoma, Cataract, Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), Oculoplastics and Ocular Surface Disease.
Eye Casualty Service
The walk-in Emergency Eye Service is available at the Institute of Eye Surgery between 10am and 2pm, Monday to Friday. Such emergencies will be seen by a Consultant Opthalmologist within one hour of arrival, no appointment is needed. Out- of -ours and at weekends, a consultant opthalmologist is available to discuss eye emergencies with clinicians and healthcare professionals, provide appropriate advice, and review if required. Research
The Institute of Eye Surgery is heavily involved in research. Our research centre- the Institute of Vision Research, is based at Carriganore House on the West Campus of Waterford Institute of Technology and also in Whitfield Clinic. The main focus of our research is exploration of ways to optimise and preserve vision in healthly and diseased eyes, with particular emphasis on age-related macular denegeration and cataracts.
